  • Mammography Screening Guidelines
    • Information about annual screening mammograms

In November 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force released revised breast cancer screening guidelines. Their findings have created confusion and even some controversy. These new recommendations, based on studies of demographic data, suggest that women with average risk of breast cancer wait until age 50 to begin screening mammography and undergo the test every other year until turning 75. The task force said there was not enough evidence to recommend routine screening for women 75 or older.

These recommendations are in contrast to the currently accepted standard that a woman in good health, beginning at age 40 should undergo an annual screening mammogram—which is supported by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Radiology and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

At Rush-Copley, we believe that there is not enough agreement among these organizations to warrant a change in the established guidelines. Therefore, we remain aligned with current American Cancer Society guidelines of annual screening mammography for women starting at age 40 and continuing for as long she is in good health. We urge all women to talk with their healthcare provider to discuss their individual risk for breast cancer and to ask questions about the benefits as well as the limitations of screening mammography.
