New System Available for Balance and Dizziness Disorders

Evaluation and treatment of balance and dizziness disorders is now available with Computerized Dynamic Posturography.  The hospital’s Neurocom SMART Equitest System® allows physical therapists to evaluate and treat a wide variety of balance and dizziness disorders.  The system helps to identify and address impairments of the visual, vestibular and somatosensory components of balance.  All test results are then compared to age-matched norms and all progress can be objectively measured.  This advanced evaluation and treatment is considered the gold standard for evaluating balance impairments.

Balance Assessment

To help determine if you have issues with balance ask yourself the following questions:

  • Have you experienced a stroke or other neurological problem that has affected your balance?
  • Do you experience numbness or loss of sensation in your legs or feet?
  • Do you use a walker or wheel chair?
  • Do you feel dizzy or unsteady if you make sudden changes in movement such as bending down or quickly turning?
  • Do you feel unsteady when you are walking, climbing stairs?
  • Do you have difficulty sitting down or standing up from a seated or lying position?

If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, you could be at risk.  The best way to determine if you have a problem is to talk with your physician about getting a balance screening test.
